Sadly alot of guitarists fall into this trap and get to a point where they only play with effects because they genuinely sound like shit without them. 

This makes me think of The Edge.  Particularly the scene in "It Might Get Loud", in which he plays a cool riff with lots of effects, and then plays it completely dry; he then laughs about what a shitty riff it really is.
