So I'm gassing pretty hard for a Telecaster
I'm look at three guitars
The fender Lite Ash
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Lite-Ash-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=511339

if get this I'm going to instantly be modding it - probably putting some GFS tele sized humbuckers in it and a coil tap for both pickups - I want a tele that will rock hard if i want it to. I've played on one - it would play great after a setup. This is more the style of guitar I'm after though - the standard tele with 22 frets.

the Fender FMT HH Tele Custom
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Custom-Telecaster-FMT-Electric-Guitar?sku=511262
great neck - very "ibanezy". pickups sound awesome and already has coil tap (i've played on it at my local shop only this one has duncans). I really bonded with it the first second i picked it up. I just wish it looked more traditional - but it's a gorgous guitar that plays and sounds amazing.

now for an inexpensive non fender option
The Douglas WF-150
http://www.rondomusic.com/wf150sn.html

same mods as the lite ash would have to be done but the money here is rediculous. like 150 to have it shipped.

you're thoughts?

it is very doubtful I'll ever own a gibson and if i do it would be something like an SG faded. They just aren't a smart value to me. I didn't say they weren't awesome guitars and the last thing I want to do is turn this into the same old gibson rant is it worth it or not. That's up to you to decide. It's not about saving up or anything like that either. I could walk in and buy any of the guitars mentioned out right with cash. I'm just tossing idea's around in my head about what I want and right now - it's not gibson. It's a tele

I'd definitely go with the lite ash. Ash is a great sounding wood to begin with, but this tele also has the vintage style bridge, which to me is the key to getting a good tele sound, though i would replace it with a callaham down the road. Anyway, this one seems like the most for your money if you're a tele guy.

I was so close to buying a Fender strat recently, about a month ago, ... My friend had a made in Mexico (MIB) model from 2005.  It played ok but I wasn't terribly impressed about how it played and felt.  I went to guitar center and played the top of the line fenders they had and I decided right then and there that there was no way I would ever buy one.  I changed my mind from saving up for a fender to saving up for an SG (probably epiphone since they are cheaper but almost identical).  After playing a Martin last week I have once again changed my mind.  I have always wanted to get an SG but I always have been more of an acoustic guitar player than an electric.  I can sell my Ovation and use that money to help buy me a Martin.  I'll post a for sale thread in the acoustic forums if anyone is interested in an Black Ovation GC-035 Celebrity with hard case mint condition for 250$.

I'm not knocking gibson in anyway - the way they feel to me is wierd though. When I play a gibby type guitar the curved fretboard is so easy when it comes to bends and vibrato that I over shoot my bends and my vibrato sounds way wider than normal. So you're right in a way they play better. I've had my strat for 12 years and it just feel natural to me and I love the way it sounds. It fights me just right. I had a financial setback - car accident and had to get a new vehicle. having to drop that much money that quick ending my dreams of a new guitar for now.

Thanks for making a coherent reply.

Car wrecks suck.  Hope you are ok from it.  It's hard to come back financially after that stuff too.  Instead of getting a martin I ended up getting a washburn rover (small travel guitar).  It was kinda due to this trip I just got back from.  The ovation was too much to carry around the airport.  I almost didn't make it to the terminals on time.  My arms were limp noodles.  I still want an SG but that will have to wait.  I sure do love my yamaha dreadnought though... that thing sounds a lot better than it looks (belt buckles and pocket knives have done a number on it).
