Ever since I saw this: http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/tapeop/buildmic/buildmic_16_1.shtml, I've been very interested in building a mic.  Does anyone know of a good website to buy a good quality microphone cartridge from, preferably for cheap?  I've had no luck so far, and it's not like Radio Shack even carries things like that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

No, I've never heard of that. That's interesting. If you find out let me know.

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a decent mic? It just seems that you are interfacing a condensor to some homebrew XLR connection. You can get electret type computer mics at the dollar store that have surprising good frequency response.
