I just bought my guitar a few days ago and a friend is teaching me to play it but i want some practice at home so I was wondering if any of the people who have been playing a while could suggest me some easy songs for beginners to learn?

I believe the first song I learned was Rock You Like A Hurricane-Scorpions. Super simple and stands the test of time. Then start on some Quiet Riot- Mental Health. Will teach you the basics of progression. Have fun and keep on playing.

Lol. First song I learned was Sweating Bullets by Megadeth. That really screwed up the learning process though. I only recently went back and started learning the conventional way. If you do what I did, you're not going to have much in the way of creativity.

That's not a bad "modern" song to start with! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Don't forget that I started to play "electric" guitar back in '86! *drinking*

Basket Case - Green Day

It's pretty easy and fun to play with a band.

Heart of Gold -Neil Young was probably one of the first I started playing and singing early 1970's on a Sears Silvertone.

wild thing... A, D, E, D then repeat

knockin on heavens door G, D, C... G D Am

CSNY Southern cross... there are tons of easy chord based songs.  Work on memorizing basic chords and working on different strumming patterns by practicing songs you like.

First song I learned was Smoke On The Water
I think it should be a rock staple for beginners

Sad thing is that nobody learns it the correct way.  Noobs always play the open, 3rd 5th & 6th frets of the 6th string.

Here's the correct way:

E
B
G
D   5    8    10        5    8    11  10      5   8   10      8   5
A   5    8    10        5    8    11  10      5   8   10      8   5
E

The beginning riff for Raining Blood, Breaking The Law, and Symphony Of Destruction were my first songs to play on guitar.

First song I ever learned was Hells Bells.  I recorded it off of the radio onto a cassette tape and then sat in my room for a few days trying to figure it out.  I figured out how to play it but not correctly.  I also had smoke on the water recorded off of the radio onto the same tape, it was the live version though.  Don't try to learn hard shit at first, you'll blow your load and then get frustrated and probably lose the learning flame.
