This is the only new thing I have and it's with my band:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/wzk103/MUSIC/IPS_mellowtoFUnker2.mp3

Not too much centered on me, but I guess the tone can be commented on...except for the wah part since it keeps clipping thanks to the laptop mic.

Sorry about that. I moved some shit around. I'm trying to get on the ball and make a MySpace page for that stuff, but that won't be done for a while.

If anyone is interested or bored, you can pretty much find all the basement sessions of my band here: http://www.personal.psu.edu/wzk103/MUSIC/
Look under the Jam Sessions folder. The folder is renamed with each update.

You'll notice a lot of takes of a song titled Dminor. It's probably the song I'd submit in this contest, but it really needs two guitarists for the last 1/3 of the song.

Well, I play rhythm and he plays lead, but I can't remember if we double tracked all the parts on that particular piece...we both play the entire song, if that's what you mean, the bits we differ on are solos, harmonies etc etc.

A little off topic. But question. Why make a difference between lead and rhythm? I know that the approach to each is entirely different, but why bother with the distinction. Bass and drums are there for rhythm, so why throw a guitar in entirely for rhythm, and conversely, why one entirely for lead? It could be a stupid question, but I've always wondered, and I usually forget to ask.

Because it's very difficult to solo without someone playing a chord progression/melody. Therefore, the rhythm guitarist is there to help the lead guitarist when he solos. The rhythm guitarist follows the other components of the rhythm section (i.e. bass, drums) while the lead incorporates some syncopated licks to spice up the riffs.

EDIT: Just recorded this last night http://www.personal.psu.edu/wzk103/MUSIC/JAM%20SESSIONS%20(updated%206-18-07)/6-18-07/IPS_74and46and2.mp3
The sax player really messed it up. What's funny about this one is that when the drummer told me that I was playing in 7/4, it messed with my head for some reason and I kept trying to play it in 4/4. After a few takes I got back into 7/4, but it was really weird.

Aww, have some love.  Kiss

Arsenal, you must listen to Iced Earth, surely? Check out the rhythm playing on their early stuff.

I understand that. Let me rephrase. Why do bands use guitarists SPECIFICALLY use a guitarist for rhythm? There's two guitarists in my band. One of them is me. We switch between rhythm and lead. I just can't see why you'd deprive your fellow guitarist the right to shred.

Maybe because they're better at different things? Or maybe because they like having different roles?
