This beat is bananas

« on: April 22, 2007, 07:18:39 AM »

My girl just got back from Ohio and she brought one of her dads old guitar amps.  He used to play when he was younger but strayed away as he got older.  It is a 1972 fender twin reverb.  I'll take some pics of it... apparently my girls mom threw it down some steps when her and the dad were fighting some years ago and it started smoking when mark tried to use it and it has never worked again.  It needs alot of work and parts but I think I can rebuild it, make it faster, stronger *enter lee majors*

Was just wondering if any of you know of any amp parts/accesories sources from the web where I could get help rebuilding this thing.

She was in Ohio and didn't come see me? I thought of hippae immediately and now he's drooling over it. Hopefully he can give you some info about fixing it.

I took the castors off because it would not sit upright with only three.  I'll buy some new ones for it because they are in shit shape.  It doesnt have a fuse in the back and i'm assuming thats why it wont turn on.  It is probably going to need all new tubes anyways since it has been beat up pretty bad.  I just hope it will work after replacing all those and that none of the circuitry or innards are !#@!ed.  If they are I'll probably just take it to guitar center and have them get it running at least.  Pretty sure I could swap out all the non electronic parts myself.

so I took the thing to a repair place after posting up a amp repair referral post on craigslist for my area.  I took it to the one that was mentioned the most as far as doing good repairs.  When I took it in for an estimate the amp guy wasnt there, he only worked mon-fri. so I dropped it off there and then emailed the amp repair guy when I got home.  Here is the exact email the guy sent back to me.

"these old fenders can always be restored, your's is in need of a refurbish moreso than repaired. I don't offer cosmetic refurbs but I've done many electronic rebuilds. Your's is in bad shape, your looking at $400 or so to get it giggable. These amps always end up sounding great so it's worth it if you're interested. Just let me know. "

here is my reply:
1972 Fender twin reverb > 400$

Go for it!

Update:

The amp is operational back from the shop and 480$ later it sounds amazing... I think I am going to leave it in it's battle scarred state to keep some mojo with it.  I put some new casters on it last night because it is so damn heavy.. I'm guessing around 60-70 lbs, maybe more.  The old speakers, caps and tubes were all blown.  All thats left is to put the two back panels on.  I will post a recording of how it sounds later but for now a couple pics.

glorious!

The guitar looks way too new in comparison. You need an aged blonde tele with cigarette burns to go with it...

yeah I know... Mark has one that he got for dirt cheap that he bought when he bought the amp.  I think he payed 300$ for the amp and a wine red Gibson Les Paul Deluxe... not an epi like mine.  His is so sweet.  Maybe someday when I have the money and time.

you have wonderful taste. Give me a hug
Anyhoo, the amp looks great, glad you got it working. what type of tubes did you put in it? Twins are always fun to mod to see what type of tones you can get out of them

Great idea!!  In the street-racing world, your amp would be known as a Sleeper.   Cool

The unkempt exterior should deter theft as well.

That's an excellent point. I was thinking that the grill cover would be nothing to recover, but why do that? Great recycle and restore project.

I've heard lots of good things about craigslist on the garden forum I hang out on, too.
