Hallowed Be Thy Name Question
«

I've been trying to play along with Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name so I can get a little bit better at soloing and stuff but I am very confused. I'm pretty sure it is in the key of G. What confuses me is that at the beginning they are playing in the Harmonic minor scale because they play a D#. But then later in the song as it picks up speed and what not, they switch to play a D intstead of D#. Because of that, I'm not quite sure which notes are in the key and which aren't. Can someone help me out?
Thanks to anyone who answers.

Two words : Key Change.
Probably from G Harmonic minor to D Harmonic minor, I'm not sure...

Harmonic Minor has a raised 7th, but you say that they're in the key of G but play D#, which would be an augmented 5th. I'm not quite sure what you're asking here.
I'm not really familiar with Iron Maiden's music, but from what I've heard their soloing can get pretty chromatic so I would go about trying to justify every note as something diatonic.

Maybe they're playing a D# AND a D? After all, D# is enharmonically equivalent to Eb, which is in G Harmonic Minor.
